When the tough gets going it really does get going, more so Westella & Willerby AFC.
Last weekend AFC Emley, this weekend saw the arrival of Penistone Church to The Euronics Ground, Barton for the NCEL division one tie as 2nd bottom Westella took on 2nd top in Penistone.
The opening 10 minutes was all the visitors as Westella looked to find their shape following some forced changes in their starting line up due to player unavailability.
Westella had some early pressure and with calls for handball and a free kick in the visitors half turned away the visitors broke very quickly switching the ball from left to right and with a first time half volley from the Penistone right winger flew in to the top corner for 1-0.
The game settled down some what with the visitors have some good chances failling to draw home keeper Lewis Exall in to any saves.
Big Brett Lucas missing a close range back post header the most notable opportunity.
Westella managed to create three good opportunites mid way through the first half. First up was a free kick after Danny Walker was fouled, Alex Wood drawing a routine save from Rhodes in the visiting goal. Shortly after was the turn of full back Rob Dodson who’s effort was again caught from Rhodes.
On the half hour mark Flounders won a flick on seeing Walker go through on goal at an angle hitting his lofted volley inches over the bar for a goal kick.
The second half saw Westella come out in spirited fashion having the fair share of possession forcing the visitors backwards.
Westella gaining some good advantage saw play break down just over the hour mark allowing the visitors to again counter attack very quickly, a square pass across the face of the goal wasn’t cleared allowing the Penistone striker an easy finish from close range for 2-0.
Westella not holding back took the game to the visitors in search of finding a way back in to the game yet with 8 minutes left on the clock it was another cross across face of the goal that was half cleared with the ball falling nicely for another easy finish for 3-0 Penistone.
With five minutes to play young Josh Walker broke away through on goal beating the advanced Rhodes to the ball and cutely beat the defender cutting the ball back for the returning Alex Wood to fire home for 3-1. Wood was soon in front of goal again this time Rhodes been equal to the effort making a good save.
“When thing’s are tough they are extremely tough at the bottom and yet again we gave a very credible performance of ourselves and I would like to think Ian and his Penistone side have been in a game today”
“Last week for an hour we where superb and for the full game today I thought we were resilient and hard to break down, we pressed well and had some good possession in the game. For moments in the first half and second half, we managed to push Penistone some what a little bit back towards their goal and credit to the 14 lads who played today they all put in a great shift and I’m sire our next win is not far away”
“Fair play to Penistone they came with a game plan and did a professional job but it’s all about how we as a side respond and bounce back starting with training mid week” Leon Sewell
