Woeful Westella lack heart

A jekyll and hyde type performance from Westella left manager Danny McIntyre reeling from their 4-1 defeat to Sheffield Parramore. Ella started the game the strongest enjoying good possession and territorial advantage but without threatening the Parramore goal. After 20 minutes of not penetrating the visitors defence, the inevitable happened, Chris Plummer’s half cleared header fell to the feet of Fothergill who’s shot squeezed through the crowded goalmouth and into the corner of the net. The game started to slip from ella in the 30th minute when a mix up between Mike Hewitt and Mike Thompson led to the hardworking Davis being brought down in the box. Fothergill stepped up to make it two for him and the visitors. The second half started the same as the first with Westella camped in visitors half, however once again, not asking questions of the travelling goalkeeper. In the 65th minute the game…

Everyone’s a winner!!

An impressive weekend for the senior teams sees wins for all 3… Westella stretched their unbeaten run to five games with a hard fought 3-2 win at Sutton Town. In a clash of contrasting styles, in the early stages Ella struggled with Town’s direct play and on 15 minutes Leureux Mendy put the home side ahead with a close-range header. Three minutes later Ella were level when Rob Start netted from close range after good interplay between Danny Ricketts and Andy Coverdale. Despite dominating possession Ella were unable to add to their tally and were indebted to Liam Taylor who pulled off a couple of terrific saves to keep the scores level at half- time. In the second period Ella continued to probe and came to grips with a powerful Sutton front line and on 55 minutes they went ahead when Start was upended; and Alan Laud netted from the spot. The game appeared to be…

Teams still content with a point…

A familiar tale from another travelling team that come to the BBC with the sole intention of achieving a 0-0. Even with 5 first team regulars missing Southwell City offered nothing going forward and were happy to sit in with 10 men behind the ball in the hope of a cleansheet. This is something the ella players will have to get used to and learn how to break such an opponent down. The home side had there first chance to take the lead on the 25th minute when Allan Laud rounded the goal keeper to tap in, only to be brought down. The most surprising outcome being the goalkeeper staying on the pitch after denying a certain goalkeeping opportunity. Mike Thompson missed the resulting penalty kick and such was the luck for the remaining 65 minutes of the game. Ella threw everything at the defensive outfit to no avail. The…

An ugly win feels as good as any…

A spirited and gutsy performance from Westella saw them grind out a 2-0 away win to newly promoted Church Warsop. On a pitch not conducive with the ella passing style of play, it was a day to role sleeves up and get the job done. The home side were content with 10 men behind the ball, a style often seen against the free scoring Westella, ensuring it was a frustrating first 40 minutes. However Robbie Start continued his impressive start to the season with a well taken goal from 10 yards. The second half continued in a similar way to the first with the home side offering no more then a long ball forward to an isolated striker in the hope they might snatch something. And that could have happened if it wasn’t for a superb save from Glenn Powley, pushing round the corner when the ball seemed destined for…

Laud leads from the front

Allan Laud took his impressive goalscoring start to the season to new heights on Saturday, scoring his first hat trick of the season at home to Calverton, helping ella to an impressive 5-0 win. The Striker now sits at the top of the leagues scoring chart with 9 in the first 6 games. Laudy’s recent performances though have not only been about goals, the experienced forward has brought a much needed steel in the front line causing visiting defenders no end of trouble. His strike partner, Rob Start is pushing Allan all the way contributing with 7 in the first 6 games, ensuring he too is high in the league charts. It’s healthy competition from the 2 and with new striker Danny Ricketts joining the club, there’s more reason for the front pair to keep on their toes. Andy Coverdale and Robbie Start scored the other 2 goals in the…

Lessons to be learned

A day to forget for Westella, the day seeming destined to be one of those days after early changes in squad members, issues with the new home pitch and facilities. That said there’s simply no excuse for the level of performance from the home side, who actually opened the scoring against the run of play, Robbie Start finishing well after cutting in from the right. Blidworth then equalised from the spot after a dubious fall in the box from Haslem who’s air shot seemed to knock him off his own feet. A sickening challenge saw the visitors reduced to 10 men, Mike Pecora feeling the force of a challenge from behind. All level at the break and what should have been an opportunity for ella to capitalise, only saw them go from bad to worse, poor marking from a corner left Edwards to take advantage and the lead for the…
