Big game for the first team

Westella & Willerby AFC welcome local NCEL division one rivals Rossington Main this Saturday to The Easy Buy stadium, Barton. Another challenge in front of Westella manager Leon Sewell and his players, “this Saturday is important for me and the players as we look for a much needed positive result” “The remainder of Saturday’s between now and end of April are all going to be a challenge but it’s one we are all willing to pull together with” “For 45 minutes last week we where worthy of the entrance fee, for the second 45 minutes we where atrocious in a simply not good enough performance that’s not acceptable”. “Every game from now on is a cup final as we push to move out of the bottom two. We’ve got some good players in our side and this Saturday is a great opportunity for the players to show their quality and…

Disappointment for Westella

Westella & Willerby made the short trip over to Brigg Town on Saturday for the local derby fixture and came away not only feeling sorry for themselves but also on the back of a 2-0 defeat. A bright opening period for Westella saw them crest some early opportunities, most notable coming from Chris Short down the right hand side driving inwards putting Alex Wood through on goal drawing a comfortable save from Dan Waring in the Brigg goal. Both sides at times where wide open and it soon became a game of you attack, we attack with little ball retention from either side. Brigg however did break the determined Westella defence on the half hour mark when midfielder Smith cut inside and fired a curling left foot effort in to the far side of the goal for 1-0. Neither side settled down as the game went on and from a…

Westella v Penistone Church Match Report

When the tough gets going it really does get going, more so Westella & Willerby AFC. Last weekend AFC Emley, this weekend saw the arrival of Penistone Church to The Euronics Ground, Barton for the NCEL division one tie as 2nd bottom Westella took on 2nd top in Penistone. The opening 10 minutes was all the visitors as Westella looked to find their shape following some forced changes in their starting line up due to player unavailability. Westella had some early pressure and with calls for handball and a free kick in the visitors half turned away the visitors broke very quickly switching the ball from left to right and with a first time half volley from the Penistone right winger flew in to the top corner for 1-0. The game settled down some what with the visitors have some good chances failling to draw home keeper Lewis Exall in…

Westella v Emley Match Report

Last Saturday saw Westella take on AFC Emley who prior to kick off where in second place behind this weekends visitors. With the score locked 0-0 and Westella riding their luck and some wayward shooting for Emley it was soon to take a turn for the worse for manager Leon Sewell in the second half. A route one piece of play from Emley saw them take a 1-0 lead and shortly after some poor officiating was to spoil the game and fundamentally spoil the hard work Westella had put in in the first half. First up saw captain Matt Fyvie dismissed with a straight red card for a fair shoulder challenge with Emley strike Flynn, Flynn missing the target with his penalty. Shortly after, some last ditch defending saw Rob Dodson hook the ball away from goal following a Coduri effort, whilst the referee in a good position played on…
